Where we are Located

Morgantown, West Virginia, situated along the banks of the Monongahela River, is 74 miles south of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania at the intersection of I-79 and I-68, in Monongalia County. Located in the Appalachian Mountains and first settled in 1758, Morgantown became the county seat of Monongalia County, Territory of West Augusta, State of Virginia in 1782. This area is was later divided up, thus creating 20 West Virginia and 3 Pennsylvania counties. The fire department was originally made up of bucket brigades and became a paid department in 1894.

Morgantown Today

Morgantown has come a long way since its incorporation. Currently 11.2 sq. miles in size, major industries have included glass factories, plumbing manufacturers, chemical manufacturers, ordinance works, both deep and strip mines. Most all of these industries have now given way to research, education, health and technology centers, including The National Institute of Occupational Safety & Health (NIOSH) and Federal Energy Technology Center (FETC). Ruby Memorial Hospital is located here and is one of a few Level I Trauma centers in the state. This fine facility also houses WVU Children's Hospital and HealthNet, a medic & doctor staffed critical care helicopter transport unit, one of three helicopter units in the state.

Morgantown is also home to  West Virginia University. While the summer population of Morgantown is approximately 30,000, this number swells during the school year by bringing over 24,000 students to WVU to further their education. The State of West Virginia has invested over $500,000,000 in buildings, grounds and facilities for this fine educational institution. This includes 4 new projects currently underway.  This gives Morgantown the feel of being a university town with all the convinces of a larger city.

All of this area is protected by the Morgantown Fire Department. With an ISO Class 3 rating & 45 sworn personnel. We operate with 3 administrative officers & work under a 3 platoon system. Running 5 companies out of 3 stations, each platoon has 1 Duty Captain, 2 Lieutenants and 14 fire fighters. Last year we logged over 2000 fire/ems calls.
